Leadership Foundations Handbook: California Compliance + Culture

Build (or rebuild) your handbook—and your leaders’ confidence.

Your employee handbook shouldn’t just protect you from lawsuits. It should help your managers lead with clarity when things get hard. The Leadership Foundations Handbook combines 2026 California compliance with coaching-forward language and practical leadership tools. You get a handbook your lawyers will approve and your managers will actually use—plus two seats in our Respect in the Workplace Starts With Me™ workshop so supervisors know what to say when behavior crosses the line.

What You Get in the Leadership Foundations Handbook

Who It’s For

California organizations (up to 49 employees) that either don’t have a current handbook or know the old one doesn’t match how they actually want to lead. You want clear policies, respectful culture, and managers who know what to say when someone’s behavior crosses the line.

What’s Included

Everything in the Respect-Ready Compliance Check, plus:

Full Handbook Build or Update

Custom employee handbook for one California location (up to 49 employees), aligned with:

  • 2026 California employment law requirements: SB 294 notices, pay transparency, leave expansions, harassment prevention training mandates, personnel record access (SB 513)
  • Your organization’s values and culture goals: We interview your leadership team to understand how you want to show up as an employer—then translate that into policy language that balances legal guardrails with human impact
  • No cold, copy-paste legalese: Policies written in plain language managers can understand and apply, not 40 pages of fear-based warnings

Two Seats in Respect in the Workplace Starts With Me™ Workshop

Live online workshop (3 hours) facilitated by Bernadette Jones, covering:

  • Recognizing “little disrespects”: Micro-inequities, subtle exclusion, and behaviors that erode psychological safety before they become formal complaints
  • Having hard conversations without HR: Scripts for addressing boundary violations, tone/attitude issues, and “brilliant but toxic” performers
  • Building team accountability: How to use the handbook as a coaching tool, not just a litigation shield
  • Manager self-awareness: Understanding when your own bias, conflict avoidance, or “I don’t want to be the bad guy” fear is getting in the way

Workshop includes:

  • Scenario practice: Real situations your managers face (late employee, gossip, attitude, favoritism accusations)
  • Script templates: What to say in the first 60 seconds when addressing behavior
  • Follow-up action plan: Checklist for documenting conversations and escalating appropriately
  • Manager-Facing Guidance Document: Quick-reference guide for supervisors on how to use the handbook in everyday decisions—when to coach vs. document, what “at-will employment” actually means, how to explain policy changes, when to loop in HR/leadership
  • Timeline: 4–6 weeks from kickoff to final handbook delivery

Starting at $2,500

(1 state, up to 49 employees)

EAP Add-On (Optional)

Add Telus Health EAP for a “policy + support” package.

For over five years, we’ve partnered with Telus Health to deliver EAP services that support both wellbeing and performance. When we build or refresh your handbook, we can also help you:

  • Integrate EAP into your corrective action and coaching process (e.g., “We’re concerned about your attendance and want to support you—here’s how to access confidential counseling”)
  • Coach leaders on when and how to suggest EAP as a support option (not a threat or punishment)
  • Normalize asking for help as part of doing our best work—not a sign of failure

This “policy + support” approach is especially powerful during culture resets, difficult restructures, or when you’re asking leaders to set firmer boundaries after years of “we’re like a family here” permissiveness.

Why California Leaders Choose the Leadership Foundations Handbook

Compliance + Culture, Not Either/Or

Most California handbooks are either cold legal documents OR vague “our values” statements. This package delivers both: policies that protect you legally and language that reflects how you actually want to treat people.

Tools Managers Can Actually Use

Your supervisors get scripts, not just policies. The Respect in the Workplace workshop teaches them what to say in the first 60 seconds when addressing difficult behavior—plus how to document without sounding like a robot.

Built for California Realities

Deep expertise in California’s complex employment law landscape—from SB 294 to pay transparency to multi-leave coordination. We know what California employers actually face, not just what the statute says.

Clear Timeline & Fixed Price

4–6 weeks from kickoff to final handbook. Fixed starting price of $2,500 (no surprise fees). You know exactly what you’re getting and when you’ll have it.

What California Employers Say

“We’d been limping along with a 2018 handbook full of cut-and-paste policies that didn’t match our culture. Bernadette rebuilt it in 5 weeks, and for the first time our managers actually use it. The workshop was a game-changer—our supervisors finally have scripts for the hard conversations.”

— CEO, Bay Area Professional Services Firm (35 employees)

“The Leadership Foundations package was worth every penny. Our old handbook was 60 pages of legal jargon. The new one is 28 pages of clear, respectful language that protects us and reflects who we are. Board loved it, staff loved it, our attorney approved it.”

— Executive Director, Sacramento Nonprofit (48 employees)

Frequently Asked Questions About the Leadership Foundations Handbook

What if we already have a handbook but it’s really outdated?

If your handbook is 5+ years old or full of compliance gaps, we typically recommend starting fresh rather than trying to patch it. During your discovery call, we’ll review your current handbook and recommend whether an update or full rebuild makes more sense. If 60%+ of your policies need rewriting, a rebuild is usually faster and cleaner.

Can we add more than two people to the Respect in the Workplace workshop?

Yes. The package includes two seats. Additional seats are available for $350/person. We recommend prioritizing frontline supervisors and managers who handle the most employee interactions and behavior issues.

How do you capture our culture and values without making the handbook too “soft”?

We interview your leadership team (30–45 minutes) to understand: What do you want to be known for as an employer? What behaviors do you celebrate vs. what crosses the line? How do you handle mistakes vs. misconduct? Then we translate that into policy language that’s firm on boundaries but human in tone. For example, instead of “Employees who violate this policy will be subject to discipline up to and including termination,” we might write: “We expect all team members to treat each other with respect. If you’re struggling with a colleague, talk to your supervisor before it escalates. Repeated or serious violations will result in corrective action, which may include separation.”

Do we get to review drafts before the handbook is finalized?

Yes. You’ll receive a first draft for review (typically Week 3 of the project). We schedule a 60-minute review call to walk through policies, answer questions, and gather feedback. You’ll have one round of revisions included. Additional revision rounds can be scoped if needed.

What format do we receive the final handbook in?

You’ll receive:

  • Microsoft Word (.docx) – fully editable for future updates
  • PDF – for distribution to employees
  • Manager Quick-Reference Guide (PDF)
  • Employee Acknowledgment Form (Word + PDF)

Can we customize which policies are included?

Yes, within reason. We start with California-required policies (at-will employment, anti-discrimination, harassment prevention, meal/rest breaks, pay transparency, leave laws, etc.), then add policies relevant to your industry and workforce (remote work, social media, technology use, etc.). If you have unique situations (e.g., employees who drive company vehicles, handle PHI, work with vulnerable populations), we’ll build custom policies.

What happens after the handbook is delivered?

We provide a rollout plan: how to communicate changes to employees, what to say in the announcement, and a timeline for getting signed acknowledgments. If you want Visionova to facilitate a manager training session or all-staff Q&A, we can scope that separately. Many clients also add ongoing HR support (retainer or project-based) for implementation and manager coaching.
